Big Mistakes Brands Should Avoid in Social Media

By Agent Image / Updated July 14, 2016 / Published September 17, 2013 / 3 min read

There have been many instances where both big and small businesses have made huge social media mistakes - which has garnered them bad publicity or has cast them in a bad light. If you try to jot down all these blunders you’ll be surprised at how many mistakes are done on a monthly, weekly or daily basis.

If you try to look at these mistakes from a different perspective you will see that these mistakes can be classified either as a true mistake or something that was thought of with bad intention.

Avoid Building a Campaign on Certain Events and Dates

9/11 is a big trap for companies when it comes to social network blunders. Every year a lot of errors and cringe-worthy moments will either feature imagery or out-of-context phrases to commemorate that dark moment. Year in and year out people on social networks like Facebook and Twitter give these companies a piece of their mind. It’s an endless cycle until somebody decides to pull this error from the roots. Business owners and companies should think this way, “Yes it’s a nice notion to remind people of that day, but do we really need to add that in our brand?” If that question was asked before posting anything that may have reference to 9/11, there would be no negative backlash that might cast a bad light on the company.

Avoid Making Statements on Topics

Companies should steer clear of making statements about popular topics because it may cast them in the wrong light. There is an infinitesimal reason why your company should not engage in commentaries. The most obvious reason is that your brand or company’s statement may backfire against you. This means rather than getting people on your side, you might make them more riled up or worse push yourself in the opposite side of the majority.
